About this calculator

How to use Centroid Calculator, plus the formulas and logic behind the results.

Tool description

The centroid is the average of the vertex coordinates. For a triangle it is also the intersection of the medians.

How to use

  1. Select triangle or points mode.
  2. Enter three vertices, or a list of points as x,y pairs.
  3. Select Calculate to view the centroid.
  4. Confirm the count of points used.

Formulas & reference

  • Triangle: G = ((x1+x2+x3)/3, (y1+y2+y3)/3)
  • Points: G = (mean x, mean y)

Centroid tips

  • Triangle centroid divides each median 2:1
  • Equal mass points → average position
  • Need at least one valid point in points mode
  • Format: x,y pairs

Calculation logic

Averages x and y coordinates. Points mode parses pairs separated by semicolons, commas, or newlines.

Collinear triangle vertices still produce an average point; they may not form a non-degenerate triangle.

Centroid Calculator FAQ

Common questions about this calculator and how to use the results.

What is a centroid?

It is the geometric center—the average of the point coordinates.

How do you find a triangle centroid?

Average the three vertex x-coordinates and the three y-coordinates.

Can I average more than three points?

Yes. Use points mode for any number of (x,y) points.

Does order of vertices matter?

No. Averaging is commutative.

Is centroid the same as circumcenter?

No. Circumcenter is the center of the circumcircle; centroid is the average of vertices.

What format for points?

Enter pairs like 1,2; 3,4; 5,6.
