About this calculator

How to use Net Worth Calculator, plus the formulas and logic behind the results.

Tool description

Net worth is a snapshot of financial position: assets minus liabilities. It is not the same as liquid cash on hand.

How to use

  1. Choose totals mode or itemized lists.
  2. Enter asset and liability figures (home, investments, loans, cards, etc.).
  3. Select Calculate to view net worth.
  4. Update regularly to track progress.

Formulas & reference

  • Net worth = Assets − Liabilities
  • List mode: Assets = Σ asset amounts; Liabilities = Σ liability amounts

What to include

  • Assets: cash, investments, home equity value, vehicles
  • Liabilities: mortgages, student loans, cards, autos
  • Exclude monthly income/expenses (flows, not stocks)
  • Track the trend, not one day

Calculation logic

Totals mode uses the two number fields. List mode sums parsed numbers from each textarea. Net worth can be negative if debts exceed assets.

Use realistic market values for assets (not purchase price) when estimating true net worth.

Net Worth Calculator FAQ

Common questions about the calculation and how to interpret the estimate.

How do you calculate net worth?

Add the value of what you own and subtract what you owe.

Should I use market value or cost?

Market value is usually better for a true snapshot.

Can net worth be negative?

Yes—common early in a mortgage or with student debt.

Is retirement account money included?

Yes as an asset; related loans against it may be liabilities.

Do lists replace totals?

In list mode, summed list amounts are used as assets and liabilities.

Is this credit-score related?

Net worth is a balance-sheet idea; credit scores measure credit risk differently.
